African nightcrawler

Vermiculture is a new development in biotechnology based product which helps to solve the partially pollution problems. Earthworm culture, popularly called as vermiculture is being widely practiced in big commercialised manner all over the world, from the developed countries like U.S.A, U.K., Russia and Japan, as well as in the developing countries like China, Mexico, Brazil and Philippines. The most commonly used type of worms or vermes (Latin word for worms) for vermiculture in the Philippines is the African nightcrawler (Eudrilus euginae), because of its ability to adapt to the different weather conditions of the country.

Earthworms is low in maintenance when cultured and can be fed by all forms of food waste, yard and garden waste such as leaves, grass clippings, rice straw and non woody plant trimmings, animal dung such as cattle dung, sheep dung, goat dung, horse dung and poultry droppings can be used as food for the worms. (the use of horse dung should be done carefully because tetanus virus is common in horse dung and is lethal to human beings.)
